Frequently Asked Questions
Find quick answers to common questions about Germany public universities, admissions, tuition fees, APS and uni-assist.
EduFleet in Rajkot guides you step by step: grade conversion using the modified Bavarian formula, university shortlisting, module matching, SOP review, uni-assist and VPD application guidance, APS guidance, and a document checklist after admission.
German public universities are known for research, well-equipped laboratories and low costs, as most charge no tuition. Their degrees are widely recognised, and many programmes have close links with industry, especially in engineering and technology.
Mostly, yes. Most public universities charge no tuition, only a semester contribution of roughly €100 to €400, which often includes a public transport ticket. The exceptions for students from outside the EU: all public universities in Baden-Württemberg charge €1,500 per semester, and in Bavaria, TUM charges €2,000 to €6,000 per semester (rising from winter 2027/28). FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg has announced fees for new non-EU students from summer 2027. Always check the university’s own fee page.
Eligibility depends on degree level. For a master’s, you need a related 3- or 4-year bachelor’s degree whose subjects and credits (ECTS) match the programme, an APS certificate, good grades (converted using the modified Bavarian formula) and English or German language scores. For a bachelor’s, Indian Class 12 alone is usually not enough: you’ll also need one year of a related bachelor’s degree in India, a JEE Advanced pass (for some technical subjects), or a Studienkolleg foundation year with its final exam.
After Indian Class 12, you usually cannot enter a German bachelor’s directly. You need either one year of Studienkolleg (after passing its entrance test) or at least one year of a recognised bachelor’s degree in India. JEE Advanced qualifiers may get direct entry at some universities.
For English-taught programmes, public universities usually ask for IELTS 6.0 to 7.0 (or TOEFL/PTE equivalent). German-taught degrees don’t need IELTS but need proof of German, usually at C1 level (TestDaF, DSH or Goethe-Zertifikat C1). Some programmes accept B2.
Yes. German public universities offer many programmes taught entirely in English, mostly at master’s level, in fields like engineering, IT, management and the sciences. Learning conversational German (A1–A2) is still strongly recommended for daily life and student jobs. EduFleet runs German classes from A1 to C2 in Rajkot.
It’s the formula German universities commonly use to convert Indian grades to the German 1.0–4.0 scale, where 1.0 is the top grade. Your converted grade can affect admission for competitive programmes.
Most programmes don’t need it. Some competitive master’s programmes, often in business or at technical universities, ask for GRE or GMAT. Check each programme.
The APS certificate is mandatory for all Indian students applying for a German student visa, for both public and private universities.
uni-assist is an application service used by more than 150 German universities to check international qualifications. It reviews your documents, checks your formal eligibility and forwards your application to the university, which makes the admission decision.
A VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is a preliminary review document from uni-assist that confirms your formal eligibility and converts your grades to the German scale. Some universities ask for a VPD first, then you apply on their own portal. uni-assist publishes the list of universities that use VPD.
Options include TU9 technical universities such as TUM, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and KIT (Karlsruhe), research universities such as Heidelberg and Humboldt University, and practice-oriented Universities of Applied Sciences. Note that TUM, KIT and Heidelberg charge non-EU students tuition.
Key documents include academic transcripts and degree certificates, valid passport, updated Europass CV, Statement of Purpose (Letter of Motivation), letters of recommendation (LORs), language proficiency scorecard (IELTS/Goethe), course syllabus/module descriptions, and your APS certificate.
Immatrikulation is your official enrolment at the university after you accept your admission. You usually submit your passport, health insurance confirmation, proof of the semester contribution payment and any documents the university requests. You then receive your student ID, and at most universities a semester transport ticket (Semesterticket).
For the Winter intake (October), start in November–December, get APS by March, and apply before 15 July. For the Summer intake (April), start in May–June and apply before 15 January.
Sometimes. Many programmes look at how well your subjects match and at your converted grade, and some set minimum grades. We’ll check your profile against each programme’s published requirements.
